History of Zhezkazgan Baikonurov University

     The development of non-ferrous metallurgy in Central Kazakhstan, the need for industrial development of deposits in the Zhezkazgan region, putting into operation of mines, plants and factories sharply marked the problem of training personnel. The higher educational institution Zhezkazgan-Ulytau region begins its history since 1961. In 1961, in accordance with the order of the Minister of Higher and vocational Education of the Kazakh SSR, evening general training technical department was opened on the basis of the evening training courses of the Karaganda Polytechnic Institute. So the first center of education emerged in the region. 100 students were accepted for training in the specialties "Electricity supply of industrial enterprises" and "Industrial and civil construction". A prominent scientist, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Kazakhstan, Hero of Socialist Labor, Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor, rector of KarPI Saginov A.S. was one of the originators of the department formation.

     New specialties were opened, the number of enrolled students grew. In 1977, the Zhezkazgan General Technical Department was transformed into a branch of the Karaganda Red Banner Labor Order Polytechnic Institute. The opening of the branch was a significant event not only for Zhezkazgan, but for the whole Central Kazakhstan. Local authorities paid great attention to the university, provided assistance and comprehensive support in strengthening the infrastructure, facilities, and the human resources. New departments were created, scientists, teachers, candidates of sciences were invited to work.

     In 1992, according to the Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 42 of 21.01.92 the KarPI branch was transformed into the Zhezkazgan Mining and Technology Institute. 

     The development of industry in the region spurred the need for training of personnel for the social sphere as well. In particular, the problem of training teachers for the growing economy of the region was acute. In 1975, the Zhezkazgan Pedagogical Institute was established. The rector of the Institute was Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences I. I.Belogrivov. Initially, personnel training was conducted at two departments: Philological and Physics and Mathematics, then in 1976 the faculty of natural geography was opened, in 1978 - artistic and graphic. For more than 40 years of its existence, more than 10 thousand teachers have been trained for the needs of cities, industrial towns, districts, rural schools.

     The first heads of institutes were Belogrivov I.I., Tastanov S.Yu., Bekturov MS, Zhakenov GK, Abdrakhimov U.T., the first deans of the newly opened faculties were Kolobochkin NS, Khamzin S.Kh.

     Zhezkazgan Baikonurov University was founded on the basis of the Zhezkazgan mining and technological and pedagogical institutes according to the Decree of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 573 of May 7, 1996 "On the organization of the Zhezkazgan University". The first rector of the new educational institution was U.T. Abdrakhimov, Ph.D., professor, corresponding member of Engineering Academy RK.

     All these years were the period of training highly qualified specialists; the educational-laboratory and material-technical base were strengthened, educational-methodical and scientific-research work was improved, the list of majors was changed in accordance with the requirements of the time, the integration of the educational process with production was strengthened.
